Link Aadhaar Card with Driving License: Explore the Benefits and Process

Aadhaar has slowly but surely become one of the most important documents for the people of India. Aadhaar is currently required to receive government services under various schemes. According to media reports, the Ministry of Roads, Transport, and Highways have started developing an easy way to link Aadhaar driving licenses for Indian residents. Additionally, you can use your Aadhaar e-card and link it to your driving license. In other words, if you have an Aadhaar number, you can link it to your driving license.

Why is the Government Planning to Link Driving Licenses with Aadhaar?

The government has decided to make Aadhaar a driving license to increase road safety and reduce unauthorized duplicate driving licenses to prevent accidents. Many cases of a person holding multiple driver’s licenses are found by Government. According to the Road Driving Act, you may not have more than one driving license. A driver’s license issued in one state is valid in all states and federal territories of that country. So you don’t need to have multiple driving licenses. To combat this menace, the central government is trying to link Aadhaar to the driving license. Duplicate licenses can be easily managed as one driving license can be linked to an Aadhaar card. This process has not started yet, but it will start when the Department of Land Transport and Highways finalizes all legal and infrastructural arrangements. If you have more than one driving license, you can hand them in at your local land transport office.

How linking your Aadhaar Card with your Driving License is Beneficial

Linking your Aadhaar with your driving license has many benefits. Among them:

  • By linking your Aadhar to your driving license, the entire process takes place under one roof.
  • The integrated platform based on Aadhaar will enable Indian certification bodies to capture and verify the license details of all vehicle owners.
  • Certification agencies will be able to distinguish between genuine and fake driving licenses.
  • If one person has multiple licenses, transit authorities can identify false documents and take appropriate action.
  • Driver information is stored in a central online database. The data is available all over India, so no duplicate licenses are issued.
  • The directive linking Aadhar with a driving license will increase transparency and fight corruption.
  • All procedures take place electronically. Unlike manual procedures, individuals are issued a driver’s license 72 hours after passing the driving test.
  • If you don’t pass the driving test, you can’t get a driver’s license, so traffic accidents will decrease.
  • Various operations related to transport have become faster and easier.
